Iterable vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud vs Braze for Malaysian SMEs
Three platforms keep showing up in Malaysian shortlists for lifecycle marketing: Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Braze. They look similar on a feature grid but feel very different in day-to-day use, cost differently at scale, and reward different team profiles. This guide compares them through the lens of a Malaysian SME.
The shortlist explained

What each platform is genuinely good at
Iterable
Iterable wins on time-to-first-campaign and ease of journey building. Workflows are visual, segmentation is flexible, and templating supports advanced personalization without heavy engineering. It is a strong fit for ecommerce, marketplaces, and digital services in Malaysia.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud
SFMC is the most powerful of the three when the rest of the business already runs on Salesforce. Journey Builder, Data Cloud, and Marketing Cloud Personalization unlock when integrated tightly with the broader Salesforce ecosystem. The learning curve is steeper and so is the cost.
Braze
Braze excels at app-driven engagement, push, in-app messages, and product-led lifecycle. If your business lives inside a mobile app, Braze is built for you. Outside of that context, it can feel heavier than necessary.

Comparison at a glance
| Dimension | Iterable | SFMC | Braze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to value | Fast | Slow | Medium |
| Best for | Lifecycle marketing | Enterprise CRM-led | Mobile-first product |
| Channel coverage | Email, push, SMS, in-app, WhatsApp | Email, mobile, ads, web | Push, in-app, email, content cards |
| Cost band | Mid | High | Mid to high |
| Engineering need | Low to medium | Medium to high | Medium |
| APAC presence | Yes | Yes | Yes |

Pricing reality for Malaysian SMEs
All three publish little public pricing. Realistic expectations for an SME with a few hundred thousand active customers: Iterable lands as the easiest to justify in the SME bracket, SFMC carries enterprise minimums that often do not fit, and Braze sits in between depending on monthly active user counts.
- Iterable: scales with active profiles, predictable contract size for SMEs
- SFMC: complex SKU model, often requires Salesforce ecosystem to justify
- Braze: scales with monthly active users, can become expensive for high-MAU low-ARPU apps
Team fit and operating model
PDPA and data residency
Each vendor offers regional hosting options. Confirm where data sits, where backups go, and how deletion requests propagate before signing. None of the three host data in Malaysia today, so a documented lawful basis for cross-border transfer is required.

Implementation timelines
| Platform | Minimum viable launch | Full rollout |
|---|---|---|
| Iterable | 4 to 6 weeks | 8 to 12 weeks |
| SFMC | 8 to 12 weeks | 6 to 9 months |
| Braze | 6 to 8 weeks | 10 to 14 weeks |
How to choose
- Write down your top 5 use cases and the channels they need
- Map each use case to platform strengths above
- Score on cost, team fit, integration with existing stack, and PDPA posture
- Run a paid proof-of-concept with one platform on one real use case, not a sandbox
- Decide based on what shipped, not what the demo showed
Common mistakes
- Choosing SFMC because the brand is familiar, then never using 80 percent of the features
- Choosing Braze for a web-only business
- Skipping the data integration assessment and being surprised by engineering effort
- Letting vendors define the success criteria of the POC
Frequently asked questions
What about HubSpot or Klaviyo?
HubSpot fits B2B and lighter use cases. Klaviyo is strong for ecommerce, especially Shopify-based businesses. They are valid options but were not in the original shortlist for this comparison.
Can I switch later?
Yes but the cost is real. Templates, journeys, integrations, and historical data all migrate slowly. Choose with at least a three-year horizon.
Do I need a CDP alongside these?
Sometimes. If lifecycle is your only need, the platform's own data model may be enough. For broader activation, a CDP layered underneath helps.
Which is best for WhatsApp in Malaysia?
All three support WhatsApp via partners. Iterable and SFMC have the most mature native integrations today.
Where to go next
There is no universally best platform. There is only the platform that best fits your team, your channels, and your operating model for the next three years. Be honest about all three.
